This Week in Politics: Race to Replace Rangel Gets Real

In New York's upcoming congressional primary, we're guaranteed to see change in a district that hasn't seen a new representative in decades. After nearly a half-century in office, Congressman Charles Rangel is stepping down.

This week, we have a primary preview with Brigid Bergin, WNYC's City Hall and politics reporter and John O'Connor, WNYC's Washington correspondent. Speaking with host David Furst about Rangel's district, Brigid says 'East Harlem is where the race will be decided.'

We'll also look at how the voter purge in Brooklyn is affecting the primary. And we consider New York's role in the sit-in over gun laws by Democrats in the House. John O'Connor says the gun debate won't affect the congressional primaries but could have an impact on the general election. He says 'New York has more toss-up congressional races than any other state in the country' and Democrats are 'expecting that the gun control debate can be an issue' that will help them in November.

New York's congressional primary will be held on Tuesday, June 28.
